About the Artist
Born in 1945 in Lewes, East Sussex, John Donaldson’s artistic journey began in his teenage years, inspired by his grandfather, a skilled painter. Creativity has always been a constant in John’s life, extending across design, landscape, and a deep appreciation for architecture and music. After meeting his wife, John embraced his true vocation as an artist, settling in Devon with his family to immerse himself in the world of painting. Guided by light and weather, John’s subjects range from the South Downs, Ouse Valley, and Lewes streets to London’s Thames, Cornwall, Devon, and Dorset. Alongside captivating local studies, he finds joy in painting the tranquil landscapes of continental destinations like Brittany and the Italian Riviera. John’s artistic evolution is marked by a less structured, more intuitive style, capturing not just the details but the emotions evoked by each subject. Despite international success and numerous exhibitions, John remains fuelled by an extensive list of images and themes, envisioning a lifetime of artistic exploration. Recognized for his popular card images, John Donaldson stands as a leading UK artist, and Steam Gallery is proud to showcase his enchanting local studies.
