Waffling away

Waffles, sugar free

One of my children doesn’t eat much in the way of eggs and I think they’re a great food so quite often we have waffles for breakfast.

Take very little time to make in the waffle maker, doesn’t even matter if the batter is lumpy.

Here’s my healthy recipe.

Ingredients:

3 eggs
knob of melted butter (we use ‘Pure’ dairy free)750ml milk
1 tbsp maple syrup (or honey)
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
750g wholemeal flour
2 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt

Method:

1 – Mix eggs, milk, butter, syrup together in a large bowl until well combined.
2 – Whisk in cinnamon, flour, baking powder and salt- don’t need to be completely smooth, a few lumps are fine.
3 – Pour just under a ladle full of batter on your waffle maker (actual amount will obviously depend on the size of your maker – trial and error, you’ll soon know how much to use).
4 – Cook as per waffle maker instructions, a couple of minutes each usually.
5 – If you can keep them warm till all are made – impossible in our house, little fingers grab them off the plate as soon as they’re made.

Serve with fresh fruit and maple syrup!

As you can see, Phlicity, my Flamingo fairy helper enjoyed them!

Mud Cake?!

chocolate mug cake

My daughters have been having healthy week at school the past week. With much excitement my oldest came home on the first day saying, ‘Mum, do you want me to make you a mud cake?’…well that’s what I thought she said – turns out she was actually saying ‘mug cake’.

So later on when she was speaking to her granny on the phone all I could hear was ‘no, mug cake’….’mugggg cake, granny’…..’MUGGGG’…….’cake in a MUGGGG’…!

She’s been making them all week. Three ingredients and no sugar! Just cocoa powder, banana and egg. This particular daughter will only eat eggs if they’re in a pancake or a cake so this is another great way to get an egg in to her now and then.

Later in the week she asked if I could share her new recipe with you all…turns out she’s up-ed it to 4 ingredients with the addition of grapes. Personally I suggest you stick with the original 3 but it’s up to you.

Mud Cake Ingredients:

1 egg
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1/2 banana (eat the other half!)
(3 grapes – optional!!!)

Method:

Valentines Day Paper Chain Hearts

Valentines Day paper strip hearts

I’ve been having fun making some of the paper chain hearts for Valentines Day and made a wee video to show you how to do some yourself.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xj0eluRY3ME]

I used Phoenix Trading’s butterfly and hearts paperchains. They are really sturdy and I love the fact they have patterns on both sides. However you could you wrapping paper and this double sided wrapping paper would look very cool. Just cut or guillotine in to strips and away you go.

These also make great Christmas decorations too, and you can string several together to make a pretty garland.

Paper Chain Hearts

Christmas Paper chain hearts garland decoration craft activity

Remember making paper chains when you were little? Endless cutting up of newspaper, or old wrapping paper to make the strips, then glue or staples as you linked them together?

Want to do it again?!

I love making paper chains with my children but I confess I take the easy way out now and use pre-gummed paper chains.

However, recently I’ve been busy trying other ideas Paper chain hearts kids Christmas craft for children with the paper strips, like these heart decorations. Really simple to do and my 9 year old discovered if you turn them upside-down they look like Christmas trees.

I did make a video of how to make these hearts for Valentines Day.

I’ve put a couple of ideas for activities and games on there too, love the idea of pin the bowtie on the teddy! Finally, you’ll need to send a thank you card, and this by Paula Bowles is probably my favourite, just because it’s so cute! wheelbarrows

The Jackson Family

“Before I came I hadn’t heard of Rachel House. I think everyone has this image that you’re going to walk through the door into sadness and death and people crying in corners. It wasn’t until I walked through the front door that I thought “wow”. It’s smiles as soon as you enter.

Rachel House takes the stress away. I don’t have to be running around, cooking meals and sorting Mark out. It lets Morgan, Eden and Sky just be kids. When we’re here, I’m more relaxed and I know that my kids are very happy and safe. It’s just a home from home.”

Is it possible to earn money as a full time mother without the kids suffering?

mums working from home

Mums working from home have a difficult task on their hands. Juggling work and looking after the children is a tough job. Is it possible to do both? I believe so. In fact I believe if you choose the right business it can enhance the whole experience.

How mums working from home can make it work for everyone

Allow me a brief introduction of myself. IMG_9962
I’m a full time mother of three, the oldest is now 9, the youngest 3. I’ve been a full time mother for 9 yrs. For the past 8 years I’ve also run a part time business.

I admit that we were lucky, at first it wasn’t about the money. My husband had a good enough job and we adjusted our lifestyle to suit one income. I did struggle in early motherhood with my ‘loss’ of purpose. It took me over 4 years to appreciate the value of what I was giving my children as a full time mother. The ‘business’ was a hobby and I didn’t even keep my commission but donated it to charity.

Then my husband’s job went downhill, wasn’t quite what he had hoped for, a little stress and disappointment and we began to wonder if this is what life was all about. Call it mid-life crisis if you wish.

So what, you might think?

Plenty folk hate their job, that’s life…but if you could change it wouldn’t you? If it was possible to do what you really wanted, what your deepest desire was, wouldn’t you at least give it a go?

My husband wanted to write. He wanted out of his job and via a bizarre set of circumstances I realised I quite enjoyed selling things and supporting others to fulfil their potential. Running a direct sales, network marketing business started to look less like a hobby. It looked more like a fulfilling way to earn an income.

WS364_storkWhat’s more, running a network marketing business like mine (I’m an Independent Phoenix Trader and I sell gorgeous cards and stationery alongside my growing team of Traders) not only seemed possible with a baby and toddler in tow, it actually seemed a positive part of full time motherhood. Perhaps mums working from home who have been doing these kind of businesses for years are actually on to something.

Here’s a few reasons why it’s working for me:

No childcare costs – maybe obvious but being able to take my children with me in my business means I don’t have to pay childcare or leave my children with strangers.

Flexibilty – because I can take my children with me I can work on my business when it suits me, not just after bedtime. And to be honest I’m not fit for much in the evening, I’m probably a morning person.

L278_Fairy_CelebrationStickers – my kids love stickers so they often volunteer to help with sticking labels on brochures or other ‘mundane’ tasks like putting cards in cellos or stuffing envelopes. They love helping me stocktake or set up my stall. This isn’t slave labour, they don’t have to do it, I don’t make them do it, but they want to. It’s fun to them.

Cute sales aids – I don’t really consider myself a people person. My social skills aren’t great and certainly don’t come naturally. So when it comes to fairs, events or even putting a basket in a workplace it’s so much easier with a toddler in tow. The children are the conversation starters just by being there, making it much easier for me.

Entrepreneurs – my kids are more entrepreneurial than me. Perhaps they don’t have my fear of failure, they’ll have great ideas and just go for it. My oldest who often lacks confidence has now raised a few hundred pounds for charity making and selling sweetie cones. But what astounds me is how she will confidently ask complete strangers passing by her stall if they’d like to buy a cone. My children are learning business skills way before they realise it and way better than me!

It is possible

So when people ask is it possible for mums working from home to be a full time mum and run a business, the answer for me is not only is it possible it’s a really positive thing and actually an enhancement of the parenting role. There are lots of different things you can do too.

If you’d like to find out more about what I do and how it works for me, just ask.

Staying within the lines – or not?

“Coloring is an activity that we tend to associate with children. As we grow older, we put aside our crayons and colored pencils in favor of more respectable writing utensils like pens and highlighters. However, it turns out coloring can be beneficial for adults — namely for its de-stressing power.”

via Coloring Isn’t Just For Kids. It Can Actually Help Adults Combat Stress..

Of course – anyone who loves Phoenix Trading knows this already and if you’ve had one of our colouring in tablecloths you’ll know that you probably spent more time colouring in than your children did…at least that’s what happens in my house! I think we adults sometimes need an ‘excuse’ to colour in, it’s not something we see as an adult activity, there are always more ‘important’ things to do – but with one of our tablecloths, or maybe a frieze then we have the perfect excuse. And of course, any such creative activity we can do with our children has to be a positive thing for us and them surely.

Here are a few of my favourite products:WS173-Hearts-Butterflies

1 – Colour in hats – we have two sets: the first contains a mermaid, a butterfly and a fairy, the second a chief, space cadet and king. Both illustrated by Amanda Loverseed.

2 – Colour in map of the British Isles – educational and destressful this comes in a presentation tube too so makes a great gift, and is also illustrated by Amanda Loverseed.

3 – Colour in friezes – I love the animal train, though we also have farm, princess carriage, under the sea and a nativity one at Christmas. I think these are particularly great as they come in six pieces and can be coloured individually and put together later to make a large frieze if you wish, but they look great on their own too. All beautifully illustrated by Claire Winteringham, Alison Hullyer or June Armstrong.

I do get parents tell me they will get frustrated if their children colour outside the lines (maybe I just have too many ocd friends?)…my response – buy two, one for you, one for them!

How many funny faces can you make?

That was my challenge for today…

image

… and as I had all my three children with me at the Ullapool County Fair today, they took up the challenge magnificently! Though my eldest seemed to think pulling funny faces at the customers was a good sales technique, I’m not so sure…

Guess I’m very lucky to have a job where I can take my children along with me and that they seem to enjoy, perhaps I should try the funny faces thing next time, my daughter often has winning entrepreneurial ideas, wonder where she gets them from?
